Your Carbon Emission
Reduction Solution

At OOCL, we are committed to a greener future by offering our sustainable shipping solution that reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in your logistics transport, bringing you a step closer to your sustainability goals.

OOCL Green is an additional service in E-Spot that offers you a simple way to compensate for GHG emissions from our surplus emissions reductions from our biofuel sailings. Regardless of the fuel our vessel uses, the Mass Balance Concept allows you to opt in for OOCL Green for any available shipments, not just those using vessels powered by biofuel.

Good as Usual

Our sustainable solutions are enabled by extra biofuel consumption in our sailings, helping to minimise your carbon footprint. Compared to alternative decarbonisation solutions, OOCL achieves your sustainability goals without compromising the speed or availability of our services.

Seamless Booking Process

You can access clear details on the costs and GHG savings for your shipments in advance before making a purchase, eliminating the need for lengthy negotiations.

Certification of Impact

At the end of the journey, you will receive an immutable Green Certificate detailing the total GHG reduced and biofuel consumed – powered by blockchain technology. This certificate serves as both recognition and proof of your sustainability efforts.

OOCL’s Green Commitment

OOCL is committed to delivering solutions that assure quality and reliability. We adopt biofuel backed by industry-leading certifications and emission estimations based on recognised standards. With OOCL Green, you can confidently meet your sustainability goals.

ISCC-Certifed Biofuel

OOCL utilises ISCC-certified biofuel for green sailings, ensuring the credibility of your savings.

International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) is a globally recognised certification system that ensures sustainable criteria for biofuel production, sourcing, and use of fuel in ocean transportation.

Clean Cargo Standard

Leveraging the Clean Cargo methodology and the Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC) framework, we share the calculation of emission estimations with most carriers. Our methodology, covering data collection, research and carbon emission calculation follows Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG) methodologies and ISO14064-1 Principles, with process verified by LRQA in accordance with ISAE 3000.

We’ve also adopted a Well-to-Wake approach to accounting for emissions from oil production to vessel consumption, ensuring the calculation aligns with the industry’s best standards.

Clean Cargo is a Smart Freight Centre Partnership of ocean carriers dedicated to tracking and reducing GHG emissions and sharing ocean container freight decarbonisation best practices.

GSBN-Issued Certificate

OOCL’s Green Certificates are issued by the third-party organisation GSBN, ensuring that emission savings are genuinely allocated to your specific shipping order. Leveraging blockchain technology, records in the certificate — including biofuel data and emission savings — are immutable and fully traceable.

In addition, the methodology of the OOCL Green Certificate, including the Mass Balance Concept, has been independently verified by LRQA (Assurance Statement Ref No: HKG00000339), providing further assurance on the robustness, credibility and integrity of the carbon reduction claims.

Global Shipping Business Network (GSBN) is a blockchain-enabled platform that ensures secure data credibility, transparency and traceability.

Frequently Asked Questions

OOCL Green is a sustainable shipping solution available with eligible FreightSmart E-Spot shipments. It allocates verified GHG emissions reductions achieved through the use of sustainable marine fuel within OOCL’s fleet to your shipment.
OOCL uses additional sustainable marine fuel within its fleet. The resulting Well-to-Wake GHG emissions reductions are calculated and tracked, then allocated to eligible OOCL Green orders through the Mass Balance Concept.
The Mass Balance Concept separates the physical use of sustainable marine fuel from the allocation of its verified emissions reductions. Your shipment can therefore receive an allocation even if your cargo travels on a different vessel from the one that used the fuel.
No. Your cargo does not need to travel on a vessel using biofuel. Under the Mass Balance Concept, emissions savings can be allocated to your shipment regardless of the vessel carrying it. You can choose from eligible E-Spot sailings, subject to availability.
OOCL Green applies to all containers in the E-Spot order. If you only require it for selected containers, create a separate E-Spot order for those containers.
The price reflects factors including sustainable fuel costs and estimated emissions for the route. Longer distances generally result in higher estimated emissions. The applicable charge is shown in the updated ocean freight rate before you confirm your order and is fixed upon order confirmation.
The Green Certificate’s emissions-savings figure is calculated using the lowest-emission service route at the time of issuance. My OOCL Centre displays an estimate based on the actual shipment. Because the figures serve different purposes and use different shipment information, they may not match.
